The Southern Hemispheres longest underground abseil (rapell) at 583 feet (178 meters) this trip is not for the faint hearted! Starts in Nelson or Greymouth this 1 day challenge is one of the world's most extra-ordinary adventures. (2 days may be required if you need some training)

The Department of Conservation will not allow you to do this trip if you pay someone to go with you to keep you safe and/or to show you where and how to go. This is a method the Department uses to keep people away from this cave system.

We disagree with this as a method for minimising peoples use of an area and feel that there should be a booking system that is availalbe to all people to make a booking to go into the area. Make no mistake, this is a very special environment that needs protecting and it is a very serious caving expedition that needs experienced supervision and advice.

As caving guides we love the extra challenge of this trip which gets us beyond our normal level of tourist guiding. We plan to do this trip once or twice a year and are happy to take not more than two people with us. There will be no charge for this but you will be asked to pay a share of the trips expenses and your own food and accommodation. We would also like you to make a financial contribution to a Department of Conservation, Conservation Project of your choice and for whatever amount you feel able to contibute.

You need to have above average fitness and the ability to get your mind in control of your body is essential! You also need to have had a reasonable level of abseiling experience and be able to demonstrate this to us or have a reputable person vouch this for you. If you need some pretrip training we can do this for you (it can be the day before) and there will be a charge for this. The amount dependant on how much training you need.

If you are interested in going on a trip then send us an email and we will put you on a list of interested people. About 2 months before we intend to do a trip we will ask you if the date suits you and if you still want to go. You will be sent an estimated list of the expenses and you would pay those direct to the people concerned, eg for petrol costs, you pay a share to the petrol station, abseil rope hire, you pay a share direct to the rope owner which is usually a local club, etc.

This is on a first come, first goes basis and you will be expected to pass a fitness and health questionaire before you would be selected to participate. There are no gaurantees intended or implied that any trip will actually occurr as it will depend on the guides work committments, the weather or whatever.
